When getting ready to take a real estate headshot there are a few simple guidelines you can follow to make sure your photo is the best it can be.
1 – The Smile. To smile or not to smile, that is the question. We all experienced it. Your child comes home with a sample of his school photo. He or she is smiling, but it just doesn’t feel right.
That’s because the smile isn’t a real smile. There are little cues that your face makes when you smile for real. Without proper coaching, these absent cues trigger your brain into realizing something isn’t quite right.
You want to look approachable in a real estate headshot, but not fake. If your not sure, smile with your lips and your eyes, not your teeth. After all, it isn’t your birthday 🙂
2- Hair. A great time to get a headshot done is right after a haircut, when your hair looks it’s best. Best to provide a neat and clean appearance. Attention to detail goes along way with clients. Stick with a style that you know works for you. If you get a radical change to your hair length or color, get a new headshot.
3 – Makeup. With makeup, less is more. If you want to have your makeup done by a professional, that is great, but make sure they understand that less is more for a headshot. It is easy to add make up in retouching after the shot, but a lot harder to remove it.
4 – The background. Choosing the right background is important. Many photographers use an all white background but for headshots but in this field it isn’t necessary. The plain white background is very well suited for actors and models showing a headshot to a casting director. However, a real estate headshot can stand out with a blurred background of a home or office.
5 – Clothing. Wear clean neat business attire. Wear warm trusting colors like blues and beige. Make sure they compliment your skin tone. Avoid patterns and instead choose solid colors. Always avoid any logos or writing on the clothing. People are programmed to read. they will read any writing on your clothing which will take the emphasis off of you. If you wear jewelry keep it simple or avoid it all together.
6 –Sleep. Get a good nights sleep the night before your real estate headshot. If possible schedule it in the early part of the day. Leave your self plenty of time and arrive early. Don’t do anything that will stress you out before your shoot.
